chennai sangamam

chennai sangamam is the only Festival of India that belongs to people of all religions, as well as to the non-believers. The harvest fest of Tamil antiquity - The Pongal re-discovering itself as urban thanksgiving. It's Chennai Sangamam. More than 2000 performers will ignite the spirit of Chennai for seven days with around 4000 performances. All in parks, streets and beaches. From January 10-16, 2009. Welcome to the longest and biggest Open Festival of India, presented by Tamil Maiyam & Dept. of Tourism and Culture, Govt of Tamil Nadu.

The Chennai Sangamam 2009, an amalgam festival of the rich cultural traditions of South India, is all set to be showcased in Tamil Nadu''s cultural and geographical capital of Chennai in Januaury next with a feast of food, dance, music and poetry.

Beginning January 11, the five-day extravaganza will dot this historical city at 17 venues, convenor of the traditional cultural bonanza, Rajya Sabha MP and poet Kanimozhi and Tamil Nadu tourism minister Suresh Rajan announced at a press conference today.

Sometimes, it doesn't matter what the original intent was in conceiving an idea as unique as the Chennai Sangamam. A huge success in the city, the festival has clearly evolved from simply resuscitating forgotten folk forms as it began two years ago, to something much bigger.

Getting more glitzy, comprehensive and interactive, Chennai Sangamam, stepping into its third edition today, hopes to sweep across the city, enticing all, in its heterogeneous populace.

It should be rightly pointed out that there are fresh concepts this year. Salsa set to Tamil music, that has been scheduled for four shows this week, Sufi music and Bhangra performances rule the roost. To the organisers, such additions to the otherwiseregular list of folk performances from Tamil Nadu ensure that the audience still come in to the same parks and halls, thus breaking the monotony and giving them a unique musical experience that other margazhi concerts haven't been able to.

Despite the global meltdown, which perceptibly has cut down expenses, Chennai Sangamam this year has an increase in the number of participating artistes, 1,400 this time, for 62 events. And there is a clear leap in the gastronomical delights on offer, from 18 five star hotels this time, as against just five such hotels which set stalls last year.
