Bhogi or Bhogi Pongal is the first day of Pongal festival in Tamil Nadu. In Andhra Pradesh, Bhogi is the first day of Sankranti celebrations. In both Telugu and Tamil cultures, bhogi pongal is celebrated on the same day. A major activity on the day is the burning of all things that are bad or of no use – a sort of cleansing ceremony. In 2009, the date of Bhogi is January 13.

In Tamil Nadu, Bhogi pongal is observed on the last day of Margali Month. In Andhra Pradesh, it is celebrated in the Pushya month.
