A 53-year-old woman from Mumbai died of swine flu at the Kasturba Hospital here on Saturday. This is the second swine flu-related death in the country, after Rida Shaikh (14) of Pune.According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Famida Panwala developed fever a week ago. A local general practitioner treated her for four days. As her condition worsened, the woman was shifted to the Ruby Nursing Home in suburban Jogeshwari, where she was treated for three days.

A 28-year-old youth admitted in a private hospital here has tested positive for H1N1 virus and is in "very critical" condition, manager of the medical facility said today. Sandeep Gaikwad was admitted in L H Hiranandani Hospital in suburban Powai on August 3 and Swine Flu infection was confirmed last evening, Manager of the hospital Manish Joshi said.

He is the first critical H1N1 patient in Mumbai. "His condition is very critical.

A team from the state government referral hospital - Kasturba Hospital - came last night to see his condition and decided to keep him here as he is on ventilator and very critical," Joshi said. Hiranandani Hospital CEO, Sujit Chatterjee, said Gaikwad was admitted with acute respiratory distress syndrome (difficulty in breathing due to a serious ailment).

The screening drill for swine flu at Mumbai international airport had barely got under way in earnest when a traveller who landed from

the UK early on Friday gave the health authorities some anxious moments. The passenger, who was en route to Hyderabad, was kept back to verify whether he had been affected by swine flu, but then allowed to fly on to his destination.


Dr Ravindra Katti from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), who is coordinating the control cell activities, said, “Around 11 am, I got a call stating that a passenger had been kept under surveillance.’’ The airport’s screening process is being handled by doctors from the Central Government Health Services, with an expert from the Delhi-based National Institute of Communicable Diseases to help out with the protocols drawn up by the Union health ministry.

The city reported its first case of swine flu or H1N1 influenza after a 36-year-old engineer tested positive on Friday.A day after returning from Honduras and New Jersey, US, on June 15, the Andheri resident developed flu symptoms. On June 18, he was admitted to the BMC-run Kasturba hospital that has a special ward for swine flu patients.

Dr Pradeep Awate, in-charge of the control room monitoring swine flu cases in the state, said the patient's throat swabs were sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune. "They confirmed on Friday that the engineer had tested positive," Awate said.
